I have been a little crazy getting all the Spirit Halloween posts ready for my clients. When I reached out to let them know some stores were opening as early as August 1, some of them told me I had to be wrong about that. I said, “Nope it’s right there on the corporate website.” Something interesting is happening earlier and earlier every year: People are starving for REAL JOY.

The Summerween marketing trend is about more than an early retail calendar. It is a signal that shoppers are ready to participate in fall sooner.
Before summer is even over, we start seeing pumpkins in stores, Halloween décor creeping into displays, and Summerween content taking over social media. At first, it feels early. Then it starts to make sense. At CMA, we begin Halloween artwork in June so there is time for approvals, and we can include a “save the date” reminder in our newsletters. Those sections often receive some of the highest click-through rates. Very telling!
People are ready for fall.
And this is not just a retail calendar shift. It is an emotional one.
Why Fall Feels Like Relief
After months of extreme heat, weather stress, and general fatigue, people are looking for something different. Fall represents relief. It feels calmer, more comfortable, and more predictable. It is a season that naturally brings people back outside again, but in a way that feels enjoyable instead of exhausting.
Fall is also one of the few true “joy seasons” we have left in retail.
Pumpkin spice, Halloween, cozy fashion, football, family gatherings, and the return of routines all come together at the same time. It is a season that naturally connects retail, food, and entertainment in a way that feels emotional, not forced.

How Social Media Moves the Season Forward
And now social media is accelerating all of it.
Summerween is a perfect example. It did not come from a corporate marketing plan. Its recent popularity came from TikTok and Instagram, where seasonal content turns into real-world behavior. People are not just watching fall content earlier; they are actively participating in it earlier.
That matters for shopping centers.
Because what starts online does not stay online.
When people start engaging with fall content in August, they start wanting fall experiences in August. That means pumpkin drinks, seasonal fashion, home décor, family outings, and yes, trips to the mall. Starbucks brought back its Pumpkin Spice Latte on August 25 this year, before meteorological fall even begins!

Why the Summerween Marketing Trend Matters for Shopping Centers
This is where shopping centers have a real advantage.
For many people, fall is when going out feels enjoyable again. They are looking for things to do, not just things to buy. They want experiences, atmosphere, and reasons to spend time with friends and family. That is exactly what a strong shopping center provides when it is operating at its best.
Events feel more natural in the fall. Pop-ups feel more relevant. Food experiences feel more appealing. Even just walking the center feels better when the weather shifts and the season changes.
The key is understanding that this is not just about selling seasonal merchandise.
It is about meeting people where they already are emotionally.
Social media creates the anticipation. Seasonal emotion creates the demand. And shopping centers become the place where both of those things come together in real life.
Summerween is not a trend to dismiss. It is a signal.
People are ready for fall earlier every year. And the centers that recognize that shift and lean into it will be the ones that capture the traffic and energy, and create the experiences that come with it.
The seasons may be arriving earlier, but the opportunity is right on time. CMA helps shopping centers turn emerging trends and seasonal anticipation into campaigns, events and experiences that bring people together… and bring them to the center.
