One of the most surprising Gen Z mall trends is not about shopping. It’s about connection.
Research recently shared by Westfield Rise found that 73% of the Gen Z women surveyed named the mall as the top place they go to spend time with friends. The mall ranked ahead of parks, restaurants and even one another’s homes.
Even more telling, 72% said they would still visit the mall if they could not buy anything.
After more than 30 years in shopping center marketing, those findings reinforce something CMA has always believed. As we explored in Mall Brands Are Cool Again, successful shopping centers are more than collections of stores. They are places where people connect, discover and feel like they belong.
The Mall Is Becoming a Community Space Again
Our previous look at retail trends for Gen Z and Generation Alpha found that these digital native audiences still care deeply about physical retail. Spending time online does not mean digital experiences can replace genuine human connection.
Shopping centers offer something a screen cannot. They provide an easy place for friends to gather and enjoy experiences together without a complicated plan. That creates an opportunity for shopping centers to position themselves as community destinations, not simply places for transactions.
What Gen Z Mall Trends Mean for Marketers
Retailers and shopping centers can no longer rely solely on stores and sales to attract younger audiences. They need to create reasons for people to visit, stay and return.
Experiential retail, including community events, interactive activations, welcoming gathering areas, local partnerships, and personalized experiences and creative programming can transform an ordinary shopping trip into something memorable.
The Westfield Rise research also found that 87% of respondents want brands to involve them in the creative process. Gen Z does not simply want marketing directed at them. They want opportunities to participate and become part of the experience.

Community Creates Reasons to Return
At CMA, we see the strongest shopping center campaigns bring retail, community and experience together. Our community outreach programs are designed to create authentic connections, increase foot traffic and give people meaningful reasons to return.
The mall comeback is not about recreating the past. It is about developing a more social, engaging and relevant future for physical retail.
